Also enjoy visits to the Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, FDR Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, WW II Memorial, as well as a visit to George Washington’s estate and gardens at Mount Vernon, and a scenic river cruise along the Potomac River.  You will also enjoy a free day to explore the many museums of the Smithsonian, walking distance or an easy metro ride from our hotel and an optional night time tour of the historic and patriotic monuments aglow in lights.

DAILY ITINERARY

Sunday July 1st – Arrive on your own into Washington DC.  Make your way to our hotel, the Courtyard by Marriott DC Capital.  The address is 1325 Second Street NE.  Our hotel is ideally located just a 15 minute walk from the Smithsonian museums and only a 15 minute walk from the Washington Monument and just one block from the metro for a short ride to the Washington Monument or the Smithsonian.  It has an indoor heated pool and indoor fitness center.  All rooms have 2 Queen sized beds.

This evening we will have a brief meet and greet in the lobby of our hotel at 6:30pm, followed by a walk to a local restaurant for those wishing to dine together this evening.

Monday July 2nd – Today we will enjoy the sites of DC on a relaxing hop-on hop-off open top double decker bus tour.  Drive past and stop for as long as you wish at many of the top attractions in the nation’s capital — including the White House, the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson memorial, WW II Memorial, the National Mall, Arlington National Cemetery plus so many more.

You can choose to follow your singles trip escort at selected stops, to explore the historic sites together, or hop on and off at your own pace for as long as you wish, at any stop you desire.

Tuesday July 3rd –  Today we will enjoy a scenic river cruise on the Potomac River with narration of the sites along the river followed by a visit and of  Mount Vernon, featuring the mansion and gardens of George Washington.

Tour details:
Travel to George Washington's popular plantation home in Virginia and one of the nation’s most beloved historic sites for this guided, six and a half-hour cruise and tour.

We will board Spirit Cruises at 8:15am and enjoy a narrated 90 minute cruise along the Potomac River.  The cruise has spacious indoor seating with picture windows throughout, plus an outdoor observation top deck.  Restrooms are available and snacks are available for purchase.

We will cruise along the Potomac River taking in the view of some of the nation’s greatest landmarks while listening to historical facts and figures from the onboard local guide to Mount Vernon, a National Historic Landmark. Upon arrival, we will enjoy a guided 30 minute tour followed by two and a half hours of free time to explore the mansion and gardens at your own pace.

Learn about Washington’s life as a founding father and first president of the United States. Explore his home of more than 40 years, including the 21-room mansion, the Colonial-era buildings, the beautiful gardens, a working distillery and gristmill and the museum and education center.

Explore the grounds and Washington’s 21-room mansion. Learn about the 18th-century, English style garden, where Washington the landscaper reshaped walks, roads and lawns, cut vistas through the forest and planted hundreds of native trees and shrubs. Visit the 4-acre Pioneer Farm on the banks of the Potomac near the wharf. This is where Washington tested and implemented his progressive farming practices. Also, learn about the lives of some 100 field slaves who put his ideas into practice here.

Visit the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center for a self-guided tour. This building features 23 galleries and theaters where visitors learn about Washington through interactive displays, an action adventure movie, short films produced by the History Channel and more.

Food is available on site (own expense). Enjoy classic American favorites in a Colonial-inspired setting at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant or grab a quick meal or snack at the Mount Vernon Food Court.

At 1:30pm we will re-board our sightseeing river cruise for the 90 minute narrated cruise back to DC.

Upon arrival, we will return together to our hotel.

This evening, if you wish, enjoy an optional guided illuminated DC Monuments tour, taking you to see the spectacle of the famous monuments aglow in lights!

Wednesday July 4th –  Today is free to explore at your leisure the museums of the Smithsonian.  The Smithsonian comprises some of the greatest museums in the US.  The most popular of its museums are the National Air and Space Museum, American History Museum and American Indian Museum.  Also nearby is the National Holocaust Museum and the National Archives (which is where you can see the original Declaration of Independence).  All are within walking distance, or if you wish, you may also take the metro very easily and then return to our hotel easily by foot or metro. The museums of the Smithsonian are free admission and are open on the holiday.

You may also wish to watch the mid-day fourth of July parade.  The parade route does not have bleachers or other designated seating – everyone watches it from a standing position, all along Constitution Avenue (or from their own folding chairs).

At the end of the afternoon, we will meet at the entrance to the National Air and Space Museum and then go together to the national mall grass in front of the Washington Monument, where we will sit on the lawn with blankets and enjoy a free late afternoon, early evening concert of Pop, Rock and Jazz, accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra, in front of the Washington Monument (from approx. 5:30 until 9pm).  Food vendors are scattered around the grassy National Mall area, as well as restroom facilities.   After the sun has set, we will witness the most amazing 4th of July fireworks display you will ever see (beginning at shortly after 9pm).

The fireworks, launched from the reflecting pool behind the Lincoln Memorial, along the Potomac, hit the skies above the Washington Monument, making for incredible photo opportunities.  A patriotic soundtrack accompanies the fireworks display.
