The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a spectacular like no other, all set against the iconic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.  Celebrating glorious symmetries through precision-led performances, with the British Army at the fore, military and cultural acts from across the globe will be joined by the iconic Massed Pipes and Drums, Pipers Trail, Tattoo Dance Company and Hjaltibonhoga.

Bigger, better and more technically thrilling than ever before, The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an experience for the senses.

There is nothing more memorable or powerful as watching 200 bagpipers March into the arena from Edinburg Castle. All of the performances throughout the evening are a mix of colorful, fun, patriotic plus amazing laser projections on the castle walls perfectly accenting the show. There is not a dull moment or bad view in the entire place and the fireworks at the end is the cherry on top!

Here is what one reviewer said after attending the performance last year:

“The Tattoo – In one word – Fantastic”

Other reviews of this spectacular event:

“There were bagpipes from all over the world, huge horses with drums on either side thumping a big rhythm. Massed pipes and armed forces bands from all over the world united in a great display with amazing laser projections on the castle ramparts”

“The USA was represented by a number of groups including the Air Force Drill
team with their precision rifle and bayonet work.”

“The highlight for me was the 'Top Secret' Drummers from Basel in Switzerland.  Their performance is wonderfully synchronized and entertaining”
“Ending with Auld Land Syne, we went to our beds very happy”

Another reviewer wrote:
“It was spectacular! I thought it would be all bag pipers, and there were a lot, but there were acts from all over the world: Switzerland, India, Africa, etc. All brought their unique music and style of clothes and dancing to the event. We timed our Scotland trip to experience the Tattoo. We were not disappointed. The entire evening at Edinburgh castle was truly outstanding, and is indescribable.  A once in a lifetime event.”

Full day sightseeing tour Itinerary

After our private vehicle picks us up at our hotel, we will:

Stop At:   Falkland Palace & Garden
Although Falkland Palace, technically, is still the property of the Crown, since it’s acquisition by the 3rd Marquess of Bute in 1887, the property has been in the keepership of the Crichton Stuart family. The village and palace have appeared a few times in the series. I season 1, the village is used to portray post war Inverness in 1946, where Claire & Frank spend their 2nd honeymoon. Whilst looking in to Frank’s ancestral history, they both secretly watch a pagan ritual at the standing stones. Claire returns alone to the stones and falls through time to 1743.
Duration of the visit: 45 minutes

Stop At:   Culross Palace
This is top of the list for many Outlander enthusiasts, and simply must be visited. Highly regarded as one of the finest examples of a Royal Burgh (a Burgh which has been granted a Royal charter from the Crown), from the 17th & 18th century, and a fine jewel in the crown within the Kingdom of Fife. It is one of the most picturesque villages in Scotland, whether you are an Outlander fan or not. Duration: 30 minutes Admission Ticket Not Included Stop At:   Blackness Castle Built in the 1400’s on the site of an earlier fort, Blackness was the main port serving Linlithgow, which was one of Scotland’s monarch’s main residence. It has served both as a state prison and a minor garrison. Although thought to be one of the best and most advanced (at the time) artillery fortifications in the land, after a long siege it fell into the hands Cromwell’s New Model Army. In Outlander, it was used to represent Fort William, where Jamie had received lashes from Captain Randall. It’s also where Jamie’s father died, after watching his son being punished. Later in the season 1, Jamie breaks into the castle, rescuing Claire from the hands of Black Jack, jumping into the water below
Duration of the visit:  1 hour

Stop At:   Doune Castle
Doune (pronounced as in June) is a village on the banks of the River Teith, just outside Stirling. In Scottish dialect, we say “let’s go up te Doune” IE the word “down” in Scotland is often pronounced as “doon”, which sound’s the same as the village name of Doune and the word “te” meaning “to”, so, when said together it gives a positive/negative up/down :-) The castle is very dramatic looking and has been used in a few productions, some of which you may recognize the name of, including the hit TV show “Game of Thrones” and the hit film “Monty Python & The Holy Grail” to name a couple.
Built towards the end of the 1300’s it has an absolutely stunning 100 ft high Gatehouse, and also has one of the very best preserved “Great Halls” in the whole of Scotland. The castle plays an integral role in Outlander as the fictional Castle Leoch, home to the Clan MacKenzie. It also features in one of the scenes from the 20th century where Claire & Frank visit the castle ruins (as you would see it now), on a day trip they are on
. Duration of visit: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At:   Linlithgow Palace
This is the site of what we Outlander enthusiasts would recognize as Wentworth Prison (where Jamie was tortured by Captain Black Jack Randall. Dating back to the 12th century, Linlithgow Palace was the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, as well as some other Scottish monarchs, and was jovially referred to as the “pleasure palace” because of this. The ruins of the palace can be found in the town of Linlithgow, west of Edinburgh, and they are spectacular! Some of the exterior scenes of Wentworth Prison were actually shot at Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland. The castle shape acted as a model for the CGI exterior of Wentworth Prison. In one scene, after a conversation with Mr Fletcher, Claire can be seen being sick. Claire & Murtagh walk out of an entrance gate which is definitely Linlithgow palace, but from a distance shot, it is Bamburgh Castle that can be seen.
Duration of visit: 45 minutes

Stop At:   Preston Mill & Phantassie Doocot Mill
A “Doocot” is a structure to house pigeons. Broken down, a “doo” is a Scottish name for a Dove/Pigeon. A “cot” is where someone would sleep (as in a child’s cot). In Scottish pronunciation it would be doo (as in boo) and cot (as in kit) so we would say “dookit” The Mill is very picturesque in a wonderful setting and situated near to the Doocot, and guided tours are available for a small fee. In Outlander, filming took place on a couple of occasions in Season 1. In one of the scenes, Jamie has to hide under the water at the Mill as Claire & Jenny are questioned by the Redcoats (soldiers). The Mill’s exhibition room was also used as a room in the court, where the preliminary hearing of Claire and Geillis took place when they were accused of witchcraft.
 Duration of visit 1 hour

We will be returned to our hotel at the end of our full day tour and the evening is at leisure to explore the pubs and restaurants around Glasgow
Monday August 8th – The morning is at leisure to relax.  This afternoon, our main seven day tour program begins at 2pm this afternoon with the pickup at our hotel for the Glasgow city tour.  We will have a brief orientation at our hotel at 1pm for all passengers who were not on our 2 night pre tour stay (and any who were on the pre tour stay who simply wish to meet and greet the new passengers)

Loch Ness and the Highlands tour from Inverness

Enjoy the scenic beauty of Loch Ness (and maybe spot the legendary “monster” that the loch is named after).   Take an optional one hour cruise on the mysterious Loch Ness, explore the village of Fort Augustus, visit the ruined loch-side Urquhart Castle, admire the Falls of Foyers and wander along Dores Beach on this fantastic one day Loch Ness tour from Inverness!

Itinerary of today’s tour

Stop At:   Dochgarroch Locks, Caledonian Canal Your one day Loch Ness tour from Inverness departs at 08:45 and follows the beautiful Caledonian Canal to the source at Loch Ness. 24 miles long and over 700 feet deep, the loch is the largest by volume in the British Isles and is most famous for its sightings of the Loch Ness Monster, affectionately known as “Nessie”.

We spend most of the morning at Loch Ness, allowing you plenty of time to go “Search for Nessie”-!   Our first stop is Dochgarroch, about 7 miles from Inverness and here you will have the option of taking a one hour 5* Loch Ness boat trip with Jacobite Cruises* who have provided Loch Ness cruises for over 40 years.

Cruise the Loch and view the castle on this one-hour voyage across the deepest, mysterious waters of Loch Ness. From here, treat those peepers – and your camera – to the breathtaking sight of the historic Urquhart Castle.

If you wish to stay on land, while others take the optional one hour cruise, you can explore the shops and other attractions in Dochgarroch for the approx. one hour we are there.

If you wish to take the approx. one hour boat cruise, the boat cruise option is 18 British pounds which you can pay to your driver at the start of this morning, when he asks who wishes to take the boat tour and he will then make the bookings by phone for those wishing that option.

Our next stop is at   Urquhart Castle

We will then visit the 13th century ruins of Urquhart Castle where you will have plenty of time here to explore the ruins, walk to its observation deck for a scenic view overlooking Loch Ness, enjoy the visitor center, gift shop and take in the views and atmosphere of Scotland’s most famous loch.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Our next stop is at:   Invermoriston Falls

Our Loch Ness tour then continues to Invermoriston, where we will pause to take photos of the bridge and St Columba’s Well – a well that was believed to have poisonous water until it was blessed by St Columba in AD 565, banishing the evil spirits that haunted it. That same year he supposedly had the first documented encounter with the Loch Ness Monster.
 Duration: 20 minutes

Our next stop is at:   Fort Augustus Abbey

We journey through to Fort Augustus, the furthermost point of your Loch Ness tour. Fort Augustus is a small town with a population of only 650 people and is a perfect spot to relax and watch boats passing through the Caledonian Canal while you enjoy your lunch at your leisure at one of the scenic cafes along the canals.
Duration: 2 hours

Our last stop is at:   The Falls of Foyers

After lunch, our Loch Ness tour will begin its journey back to Inverness, stopping at the Falls of Foyers. The majestic 165ft waterfall was a favorite retreat for poet Rabbie Burns, and is truly breath-taking. Enjoy plenty of time here to soak up the atmosphere and then we will be returned back to Inverness.
Duration: 1 hour

Upon being returned back to Inverness, the final evening is at leisure to again enjoy dinner at your leisure in the cafes and pubs of Inverness, within walking distance of our hotel.

Enjoy the following images, which you will enjoy in person on today’s tour

Just an amazing experience, the place was simply magical and breathtaking. Tour guide Chris makes the trip more lively with his sense of humour and his knowledge of the place's history and point of interests. Tour was well planned/organised giving us enough time to go out, learn and interact. Aside from the rain (water sunshine), we truly enjoyed the whole tour. *i enjoyed all Die Hard movies. He reminds me of Bruce Willis

It was simply amazing. The itinerary was well planned. It provided us the chance to get a good feel of all the major sight seeing options of Highlands. In addition to this Chris was the best tour guid with such a good sense of humour and good knowledge of inverness and highlands that further added charm to the tour. If I get the chance to go for this tour again I would definitely go. It was such a lovely and heart warming experience that I would like to suggest everyone to do it atleast once in their life. Thank you Chris

This is one trip you should not miss. We did the tour with Neil and he was FABULOUS. The isle of skye is a place whose beauty is very difficult to describe in words. The trip is very well planned with enough time to enjoy the sights. Weather though can play a spoilt sport. But then we are talking about Scotland, right 藍

Today we took this tour with Stuart (with moustache ) and our 3 kids. The weather was glorious and so was this experience!! We visited a mix of waterfalls, highland towns, Urquhart Castle and the stunning Loch Ness. Stuart’s knowledge of the Highlands and Scotland was amazing and he answered many questions from my kids. This was a magical day and I will never forget it! Thank you  gbsct

close-popupThe tour was really good and you can make a good idea of the Highlands visiting those places. We were really lucky because of the driver (Cris), who knew a lot of facts and information about the region and its customs. Another amazing thing was that Cris drove to extra places he knew out of the guide tour in order to improve our experience. We had the misfortune of a car accident that bloqued the road in the north of Skye, but Cris quickly though another things we could visit and the loss was reduced. I would strongly recommend it.
