The Czech take their Christmas markets very seriously. Lined with craft booths, food stalls, and live entertainment, a Christmas market is the best way to experience traditional Czech culture and traditional Czech foods. With unique products and handcrafted gifts, the markets are also the perfect place to do last-minute shopping.

If you’re planning to spend a Christmas in Prague, then you’ll have a variety of markets to choose from. Each one is different, which only adds to the festive and often magical atmosphere. THE BEST CHRISTMAS MARKETS IN PRAGUE

There are dozens of Christmas Markets to visit during your trip to Prague. For a festive atmosphere, fun activities, tons of shopping, and food check out one of the following seven Christmas markets considered the best in Prague.

1. OLD TOWN SQUARE CHRISTMAS MARKET (STAROMESTSKE NAMESTI)

As the busiest and most famous Prague Christmas market, this vibrant market attracts millions of visitors each year. Located right in the middle of the historic city center, the Old Town Square market is buzzing with a warm atmosphere and festive Christmas spirit at all times of the day.

Hundreds of craft booths, food stalls, and shops are dotted around the bustling square, which is home to the famous Jan Hus statue and astronomical clock.

This market is the biggest and the most popular for a reason. It’s got a lot of extras that the smaller markets simply don’t have.

First off, this market hosts the Prague Christmas Tree and nativity scene. The huge, real tree is the centerpiece of the market and stands in front of the Church of Tyn so you can get some great photos. The tree is beautifully decorated with lights and ornaments and really comes to life after sunset, when you can see it in all its lit-up glory.

The Prague Xmas market in Old Town Square also has a stage to host caroling, concerts, dance performances, and other live Christmas shows for visitors of all ages to enjoy.

You can buy gifts and other trinkets from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm and you can enjoy the food and drink from 10:00 am until midnight.

2. WENCESLAS SQUARE CHRISTMAS MARKET (VACLAVSKE NAMESTI)

The Wenceslas Square Christmas market is also located in the center of Prague, which makes it’s ideal for visitors and tourists. Although it’s not as picturesque or well-known as its big brother, Old Town Square, Wenceslas Square it is still an excellent place to soak in the festive Christmas atmosphere.

Filled with booths, food stalls, and entertainment, Wenceslas Square is guaranteed to have something that sparks your interest. Hunt for hand-crafted wooden toys, purchase famous Czech glassware or buy a beautiful ornament to take back home.

Wenceslas Square also has a tree lighting ceremony each night at 5 pm. Not only will you see the Christmas tree decorated, but you’ll also get a chance to enjoy an entertaining light show! The animations are inspired by two poems – the Moldau by Bedřich Smetana and the Giant Mountains Fairy Tales by Vadim Petrov.

Younger guests will also love the activities at Wenceslas Square. Besides looking for gifts and toys to put on their Christmas wish list, children can play in the small petting zoo located near the Christmas tree.

This market in Prague is also open from December 1 until January 6  with the food and shop stands having the same opening hours as the ones of Old Town Square: refreshments open from 10:00 am to midnight and goods open from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.

3. REPUBLIC SQUARE CHRISTMAS MARKET (NAMESTI REPUBLIKY)

Located a stone’s throw away from Prague’s historic city center, Republic Square is a charming Christmas market. You can find it right in front of the Palladium shopping center near the Old Custom’s House.

This is probably the smallest Christmas market in Prague. However, what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm and character. Decorated with small, wooden stalls, you’ll experience the coziness of a local market right in the middle of the city!

Although there are only 30 or so stalls, you’ll still be able to find traditional classics like toys, candies, and souvenirs. Best of all, the prices here are considerably cheaper than in other Xmas markets in Prague. Since it’s located just a few steps from Old Town Square, you’ll probably find a better deal on all your Christmas shopping at Republic Square.
You can also find a variety of local food for sale. Sample some authentic sweets, drink a mug of hot mulled wine, and snack on hot roasted chestnuts.
This one will be less crowded and usually is a bit cheaper than the other central Prague xmas markets.

This is a favorite of locals and visitors alike because it still provides a taste of the authentic Prague Christmas market experience without the huge crowds and ridiculously high prices. This market is known to have the best selection of food, so some people like to stop at the Náměstí Republiky market to grab some drinks and food and browse the stalls before heading into Old Town Square to see the tree.

At this Prague Xmas market, you’ll also find traditional Christmas goods like mistletoe, Advent wreaths, toys, decorations, and more.
This market is open from December 1  until December 30  from 10 am to 10 pm every day.

4. PRAGUE CASTLE CHRISTMAS MARKET (PRAZSKY HRAD)

Climb to the top of Prague Castle for one of the most amazing Prague Christmas markets. With the snow-covered city as your backdrop, you’ll get to enjoy a beautiful view along with a bustling Christmas atmosphere.

Over 70 different stalls are set up on Náměstí u Sv. Jiří – or St. George’s Square. You’ll find both traditional handcrafted products and souvenirs, as well as quirky, one-of-a-kind gifts that you won’t find anywhere else. Not to mention, you can enjoy a variety of warm snacks, like trdelník pastries.

Although many visitors come for the shopping and delicious Czech treats, the biggest draw of this Christmas market is the astounding view of Prague. The castle is located across the Vlatava River and boasts unobstructed views of the historic city center and surroundings.

Prague Castle is also the most popular attraction in the entire city, make sure to read our things to know before visiting the Prague Castle article. There’s no better setting than having the 9th-century castle loom over you as you enjoy the picturesque market in St. Geroge’s Square!

5. PEACE SQUARE CHRISTMAS MARKET (NAMESTI MIRU)

The Peace Square market can be found in the Vinohrady district, right in front of the Church of St. Ludmila. As it’s off the beaten path, it’s one of the best markets if you are looking for an authentic Czech experience. It’s mostly frequented by locals since only a few tourists venture to the Southeast of Prague.

Traditional handicrafts can be found in almost every stall here, especially ceramic or wooden products. There is also a large variety of Christmas decorations, including Advent calendars, wax candles, and fresh wreaths.

The items are priced much more affordably than other markets in the city center. For this reason, Peace Square is worth a visit on your Christmas market tour of Prague. You’ll get to soak in the authentic atmosphere of what makes this city so special!

6. TYL’S SQUARE (TYLOVO NAMESTI)

The market at Tyl’s Square is also located in the Vinohrady district of Prague. It may be small compared to the rest of the Christmas markets in Prague, but it’s still teeming with festive treats and traditional Czech goodies.

The entire square is decorated in bright lights. From the life-size angel statues to the glowing neon candles, the entire Christmas market is sparkling at all hours of the day.

Like the Peace Square market, Tyl’s Square market attracts mainly locals. As a result, you’ll find more boutique and independent items made with higher quality than what you’d find in the city center.

The food here is also a step up from what you’d find in other markets. Foodies will love the Moravian cakes and honey gingerbread cookies. If you’re feeling a bit thirsty, then you can also wash them down with a glass of Tuscan wine or a mug of hot chocolate. 7) Kampa Island Christmas Market 

• Location: Kampa Island
• Dates: December 8, 2021 – January 6, 2022
• Times: 10:00 am – 9:00 pm

Located just across the Charles Bridge in one of the most picturesque areas of the city, this smaller Prague Christmas market is worth a visit. Enjoy a hot chocolate or a grog while you browse the homemade gifts and souvenirs with a beautiful winter view of the Vltava River in the background, especially if there’s snow on the ground!

At this smaller market, you can still find all the essentials of the Prague Xmas markets, along with a few more creative stalls with straw ornaments, wooden toys, glass figurines, and clothing.

This quaint market, and its gorgeous views, is open during the pretty much the entire month of December in Prague.

Beer has a long and illustrious history in the Czech Republic, so join a tasting and discover some of the very best beer in the world.  Our Beer tour is operated by AMA Waterways. (B)

After our beer tour, enjoy a free afternoon at leisure to explore the many walkable Christmas markets of Prague.

Today we will depart from Prague via motor-coach and enjoy a stop in Pilzen. After a local highlights tour, we are driven to Nuremberg where we will board our ship. All transportation is operated by AMA Waterways.  (B,D)

Today is Christmas Day, so we will have a Christmas day social gathering on the ship for our group passengers and then all will enjoy the ship sponsored Christmas night special dinner tonight.

You have three choices of included excursions while in Nuremberg. Enjoy a guided tour through Nuremberg’s beautiful medieval city, showcasing the Imperial Castle, famous town wall and the legendary fountain of the Market Square. Or turn back the pages of a darker history with a guided tour of the city’s most important WWII sites, including the enormous Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds. You’ll also visit the Nuremberg Trials Memoriam, and Courtroom 600, if the courtroom is not in session. Alternatively, savor traditional Franconian specialties by sampling famously delicious Nuremburger Bratwurst, Rot bier (red beer) and lebkuchen (gingerbread). En route to Regensburg, you’ll cruise through the man-made marvel, the Main-Danube Canal. (B,L,D)

Today you again have three choices for your included shore excursion.  Explore one of Germany’s best preserved medieval cities, Regensburg, on a guided walking tour showcasing the city’s architectural highlights, including the Old Town Hall and the Porta Praetoria. Alternatively, sample some Bavarian specialties—beer, sausage and pretzels, and for those who wish to be more active, join a bike tour to Walhalla where you will see the neoclassical white marble temple inspired by the Parthenon in Athens. Today’s included excursions feature a choice of either a walking tour along Passau’s cobblestone streets admiring the Gothic and Italian Baroque architecture and St. Stephen’s Cathedral, or for guests looking for a more active morning, you can choose between a guided bike tour along the Inn River, or a guided hike up to the Veste Oberhaus Fortress for panoramic views overlooking three rivers. Later in the day, set sail for Linz. (B,L,D)

Today’s included excursions feature a choice to Explore Melk, known for its magnificent Benedictine Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe’s largest and most revered monasteries. Within these walls you will find frescoes painted by Johann Michael Rottmayr and Paul Troger, as well as a famed collection of musical manuscripts. Alternatively, you can go on a walking tour along Dürnstein’s cobblestone streets to the Baroque Stiftskirche, with its famed church tower, or join a guided bike tour that takes you through the UNESCO-designated Wachau Valley. Later in the day, set sail through the vineyard-rich Wachau Valley. (B,L,D)

OR, IF YOU prefer to divert from the cruise line’s included shore excursions today, you can choose to upgrade (for a fee) to a shore excursion planned just for our singles group.  This customized group shore excursion will go to the scenic towns of Halsdtadt Austria and Salzburg Austria. 

Halstadt is a beautiful village nestled along stunning Lake Halstadt and against a beautiful mountain setting behind the lake.  Halstadt was the location setting on which the scenery in the popular Disney movie “Frozen was based. 

We will enjoy a brief walking tour of the village, followed by free time to explore the village and the waterfront at your leisure.

Next we will be taken by chartered vehicle to Salzburg Austria.  Salzburg is best known as being the setting for the popular musical film “The Sound of Music.  It was also the home of the famous composer Mozart.  Our tour of Salzburg will show us an exterior view from of “The “Sound of Music”, as well as the home of Mozart (which is now a museum to his life and work).  You will then have free time to explore at your leisure (you can enter the museum at your own cost if you wish during your free time, or just explore the shops and lively Christmas markets in Salzburg if you prefer.

Lastly, we will be driven by our private vehicle to Vienna, where we will have free time to explore the fabulous Christmas markets and lights of the holiday season, before we are taken back to our cruise ship, which will be docked overnight in Vienna.
 

The “City of Waltzes” offers a treasure trove of gems and on your included city tour, you’ll see many of them, including the majestic Opera House and the former Imperial Palace of the Habsburgs. Conclude your tour in Vienna’s historic city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and then afterwards, visit the grand St. Stephen’s Cathedral. For a more active exploration of the area, discover Vienna on a guided bike tour. During the afternoon, spend leisure time exploring this iconic city even more. (B,L,D)

You cannot help but fall in love with Budapest, known as the “Queen of the Danube.” Your included city tour begins with a visit to the vibrant Great Market Hall brimming with vendors selling everything from food to souvenirs. The remainder of this tour takes you to both the Buda (hilly) and the Pest (flat) sides of the river.

As an alternative choice, you may wish to choose an excursion taking you on a hike up to Castle Hill for breathtaking views of the city below. (B,L,D)

Christmas markets

Traditional Christmas fairs in Budapest kick off in late November and last through December 31. From tangy scents of local food and famous mulled wine (or Glühwein, as the Hungarians call it) to an abundance of New-Year-inspired candy and spectacular laser shows—Budapest Christmas markets have a little something in store for you.

Firework shows

Budapest can't be called unique for celebrating the advent of the new year with fireworks, but they sure do it differently from any other city—because you can watch them from ancient castles! You'll be able to enjoy the broad spectrum of colors and the fantastic lights flowing across the sky. The best locations for firework-watching are the Buda Castle and the Fisherman's Bastion. But if you prefer something less fancy, save yourself a spot on the banks of the Danube River.

Marvel At The Fireworks Show

Most major cities celebrate New Year’s Eve with a fireworks display, but that doesn’t mean they’re all the same, and the Budapest locals will argue that theirs is most definitely the best. Just before midnight on 31st December, stake out a spot on the banks of the Danube river and marvel at the spectrum of color and light spilling out across the sky over the Hungarian Parliament and St Stephen’s Basilica.

What other capital can boast these for a NYE celebration? Budapest is famous for its outdoor spa parties (also known as sparties), perfect both for pre- or post- New Year celebrations. While they do sometimes throw NY countdown parties until around 3 am, most baths lock their doors to visitors at about 6 pm on December 31 and open the following year (we mean, the morning of January 1). So check out the schedule of the ones that sound most exciting beforehand and, you know, soak it up!

Budapest and the Danube river have inspired many poets and artists for centuries. Sure thing, this is reflected in modern Hungarian culture. For example, the Danube Palace annually hosts a New Year's Eve gala concert featuring classical melodies and folk music pieces. The show takes two hours and is preceded by a five-course dinner with extravagant meals and suitable wines. In other words, you'll definitely get a New Year's vibe at this event.

Celebrate At The Danube Palace

Each New Year, Budapest’s Danube Palace is host to a dazzling two-hour gala concert, which includes soaring classical pieces alongside traditional Hungarian folk music. It follows a sumptuous five-course dinner and is rounded off with a rollicking party that’s fuelled with Champagne into the early hours.
