FALL COLORS OVERHANGING MAGNIFICENT ST STEPHEN’S CATHEDRAL IN VIENNA

INCLUDED (FREE) SHORE EXCURSION CHOICES TODAY

(Choice 1) Vienna/Austria in a Nutshell

On a comprehensive journey through the Austrian largest and capital city by motor coach and on foot, you'll be enchanted by the endless treasures of Vienna. After an approximately 45-minute drive aboard your motor coach, your first glimpse into the magnificence of Vienna will be at the legendary Ringstrasse, or Ring Road, known as one of the world's most beautiful boulevards. Here you'll find some of Vienna's most significant sites including the Imperial Palace, Vienna State Opera and Parliament, and the Natural History Museum.

You'll arrive at Burg theater, the Austrian National Theater and one of the most important German-language theaters in the world. The theater's opening in the late 18th century marked the beginning of the heyday of German theater. It was redesigned and reopened in 1888 on the Ringstrasse, quickly becoming a world-famous attraction for its influence on theater and beautiful façade.

Following exploration of Burg theater, embark on a walking tour of some of Vienna's coziest neighborhoods, marveling at the grandeur of sites like the thousand-year-old Gothic St. Stephen's Cathedral, juxtaposed with bustling modern-day cafes and social hubs. Visit Heldenplatz, the beautiful public space surrounding the Hofburg (Imperial) Palace, as well as Michaelerplatz, a famously popular square boasting neo-Baroque architecture and an open display of excavated Roman ruins.

 Level: Moderate
 Walking Type: Medium
 Approximate Duration: 4 Hours

(Free Excursion Choice 2) Imperial Schönbrunn Palace

Explore Schönbrunn Palace, the UNESCO-recognized Baroque wonder with expansive gardens that are as masterfully designed as the palace itself.

Following a 45-minute motor coach drive from the ship, spend the day reveling in the royal lifestyle of the 18th century at the former Imperial Palace of Vienna, Schönbrunn Palace. This 1,441-room Baroque castle is one of the most important architectural, cultural and historically profound monuments in Austria, its storied past chronicling the dramatic six-century reign of the Habsburg dynasty.

The palace's humble roots as a hunting lodge are recalled within its now splendid walls, as well as its transition into a royal summer palace. So spectacular are the surrounding gardens, they share UNESCO World Heritage status with the palace itself. Originally used as hunting grounds by the Habsburgs, the gardens were transformed into an intricate wonderland of lush landscapes lining avenues and intersecting pathways during the reign of Maria Theresa in the 1760's.

Your immersive experience will include an hour-long tour of the palace, taking you through many of the well-preserved gilded rooms, then into the ethereal garden complex. Enjoy some leisure time to stroll the gardens and take in the expansive vistas, as well as some coffee and refreshments, then board your motor coach for the return to your Crystal ship.

INCLUDED (FREE) SHORE EXCURSIONS CHOICES TODAY

(choice 1) Durnstein Walking Tour and Monastery

Become acquainted with the enchanting town of Dürnstein during a guided walk and visit to its stately landmark, Dürnstein Abbey.

Beginning from your docked river yacht, take a stroll through the beautiful village of Dürnstein. Pass its most significant sites and hear legends about the town, its ruined castle and King Richard I of England, also known as Richard the Lion heart. Reaching Dürnstein Abbey, enjoy an interior visit to this picturesque treasure. Established in 1410 and rebuilt in 1710 in the elaborate Baroque style, the abbey is the centerpiece of the town’s photogenic riverside scene. The abbey’s most notable feature, its ornate blue tower, rises proudly above the city. Enjoy some time at leisure to browse the town’s shops or relax at a café to savor Dürnstein’s rich history and charming atmosphere before returning by foot to your Crystal vessel.

Important Notes:
As this excursion involves continuous walking over uneven surfaces in the old city, it is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. Guests should be aware that this excursion involves substantial walking for a period of approximately 60 minutes over a distance of about one mile. It is recommended that guests dress in casual clothing and wear flat, comfortable shoes

(Free excursion choice 2) Hike to Dürnstein Castle Ruins

A combination history lesson and exercise jaunt, this trek up to the ruins of Dürnstein Castle affords a chance to stretch your legs and gaze at views stretching out over the Wachau Valle

Setting out from your Crystal river yacht, follow your guide by foot along the riverbank and the ancient town walls before beginning the uphill hike to the castle. During the next 30 to 45 minutes, make some stops to admire the scenery and hear your guide regale you with tales of the town of Dürnstein, its ruined castle, and the story of Richard the Lionheart. Dürnstein was first mentioned in 1192, when Leopold V, Duke of Austria, held King Richard I of England, also known as Richard the Lionheart, captive after their dispute during the Third Crusade.

Today, only the whisper of the legend and the crumbling ruins of the castle remain, spellbinding reminders of a bygone time. The trail leads you through some of the most beautiful scenic outlooks of the Wachau Valley and up to the castle remnants, where you will marvel at its still-imposing stature and the Valley vistas. After taking in views from high above, take the walk back into town, passing the most important sites of Dürnstein, including Dürnstein Abbey, founded in 1410 and rebuilt in the grand Baroque style in 1710. Wrapping up your invigorating trek, pause for refreshments before returning to your Crystal river yacht.

The Wachau Valley is known for its rolling hills, vineyards and fortresses. Enjoy scenic views of the hillsides, fortresses and the Fall Colors of the season, as we sail through the Wachau Valley

As the Danube literally squeezes itself through between cliffs and hills, the natural beauty of this valley is stunning. On top of this, imagine dry-stone terraces cut into the slopes, and you’ll find, arguably, the most scenic section of the Danube. Travel author Rick Steves said the Wachau Valley along the Austrian Danube is “as pretty as river valleys come”.
